POLICE AND IMMIGRATION SERVICES CLAMP DOWN ON ILLEGAL MINING IN SEFWI WIAWSO

The Ghana Police Service, in collaboration with the Ghana Immigration Service, has conducted an operation against illegal mining activities at Agona Asafo in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality of the Western North Region.

The operation was aimed at clamping down on illegal mining activities at the site and enforcing the laws governing mining and environmental protection.

Upon arrival of the security personnel at the mining site, suspected illegal miners fled the area, abandoning various equipment and items believed to have been used for their activities. The security officers subsequently confiscated the equipment found at the site.

The intervention comes about a year after the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Dominic Gyasi, personally led an operation to the same area, where some persons suspected of engaging in illegal mining were arrested.

The latest operation demonstrates the continued efforts by the security agencies and the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly to address illegal mining activities and protect the environment and natural resources within the Municipality.

The Assembly has reiterated its commitment to working closely with the security agencies to tackle illegal mining and other activities that threaten the environment and the wellbeing of communities.
