The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sefwi Wiawso, Hon. Dominic Gyasi, has successfully intervened to prevent a planned protest by the youth of communities surrounding the Asante Gold Mines Ltd concession.
Reports indicated that some youth groups had expressed strong dissatisfaction over employment opportunities, social support, and other community-related concerns. They had threatened to stage a massive protest to demand better engagement from the mining company.
In response, Hon. Dominic Gyasi swiftly convened a dialogue with the leadership of the youth groups, traditional authorities, and officials of Asante Gold Mines Ltd to address the brewing tensions. He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and order while ensuring that the concerns of the local communities are heard and addressed.
During the meeting, the MCE assured the youth that the Assembly would continue to facilitate open dialogue between the mining company and the communities. He urged the company to strengthen its corporate social responsibility (CSR) commitments by investing in job creation, infrastructure, and social amenities that directly benefit the people.
Hon. Gyasi further appealed to the youth to exercise patience and pursue peaceful dialogue as the most effective way to resolve grievances. He cautioned that violent protests could negatively affect the image of the Municipality and discourage potential investors.
Representatives of Asante Gold Mines Ltd welcomed the intervention and pledged to enhance their engagement with the affected communities. They assured stakeholders that steps would be taken to create more employment opportunities and implement sustainable development projects.
The timely intervention by Hon. Dominic Gyasi was widely commended by community leaders and security agencies, who noted that it had averted a potentially volatile situation.
The MCE reiterated the Assembly’s commitment to safeguarding the peace and development of the Municipality while ensuring that local communities benefit equitably from natural resources.
