The Municipal Chief Executive of Sefwi Wiawso, Hon. Dominic Gyasi, has ordered the immediate closure of Don Feng Company Ltd. following reports and inspections that revealed poor and unsafe working conditions for workers at the company’s operational site within the Municipality.
The decision was taken after a joint inspection by the Municipal Assembly and relevant regulatory agencies uncovered concerns relating to inadequate safety measures, poor welfare conditions for workers, and non-compliance with basic occupational health and safety standards. Workers were reportedly exposed to hazardous conditions without appropriate protective equipment and adequate sanitation facilities.
Hon. Gyasi stated that the Assembly will not compromise on the safety, dignity, and rights of workers operating within the Municipality. He emphasized that all companies must comply with Ghana’s labour laws, environmental standards, and workplace safety regulations, regardless of their size or influence.
“We will not allow any company to subject workers to inhumane conditions. Development must not come at the expense of human lives and dignity,” he said.
The Municipal Chief Executive directed that the company remains closed until all identified deficiencies are addressed and certified by the appropriate regulatory bodies. He further warned that any company found violating labour and safety regulations will face similar sanctions.
This decisive action has been welcomed by community members and workers’ groups, who have long raised concerns about workplace safety in some industrial and construction sites within the Municipality. The Assembly has also announced plans to intensify routine inspections of worksites to prevent future violations and promote decent working conditions across the Municipality.
