The newly trained Sefwi Wiawso Blue Water Guards have paid a courtesy call on the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Dominic Gyasi, after successfully completing an intensive training program. They represent the first batch of officers to be stationed in the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality under the Government’s new initiative to protect Ghana’s water resources.
The Blue Water Guard program, launched by the President of the Republic of Ghana, is a strategic intervention designed to safeguard the Nation’s rivers, streams, and other vital water bodies. It seeks to combat illegal mining (galamsey), pollution, and unsustainable practices that continue to threaten water security, livelihoods, and public health.
Welcoming the guards to his office, Hon. Dominic Gyasi commended them for their dedication and assured them of the Assembly’s full support. He pledged to provide the necessary logistics, resources, and collaboration to enable them to discharge their duties effectively.
“The protection of our water bodies is critical to the survival of our communities. I want to assure you that the Assembly will work closely with you and provide the support you need to succeed. Your presence here is a sign of government’s commitment to environmental protection, and we must all play our part,” the MCE said.
The leader of the Blue Water Guards expressed gratitude to Ho. Gyasi for the warm reception and reiterated their readiness to serve the Municipality with professionalism and integrity. He noted that their training has equipped them with skills in surveillance, community engagement, and enforcement, which they are eager to put into action.
The Blue Water Guards are expected to work in close collaboration with the Municipal Assembly, traditional authorities, security agencies, and local communities. Their responsibilities will include monitoring water bodies, educating the public on sustainable practices, and preventing activities that pose environmental risks.
The deployment of the guards to Sefwi Wiawso is expected to significantly boost efforts to protect the Municipality’s rivers and streams, ensuring that future generations benefit from safe and sustainable water resources.
