SEFWI WIAWSO MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY HOLDS ROAD SAFETY COMMITTEE MEETING

The Road Safety Committee of the Sefwi Wiawso Municipal Assembly, on Thursday, 20th February 2025, held a meeting aimed at addressing road safety concerns in the Municipality. The gathering focused on road accident data reported between 2021 and 2024, with a particular emphasis on the statistics for the Sefwi Wiawso Municipality, which accounted for a staggering 42% of the total accidents reported within the Region.

The meeting featured key discussions on the need for increased road safety measures and the mitigation of factors contributing to road accidents. A significant portion of the meeting revolved around the growing issue of encroachments on public roads. Street vendors, who set up along roadsides, were highlighted as a major cause of these encroachments. Additionally, the illegal tipping of sand and the parking of faulty vehicles along roadsides were also noted as contributors to road hazards and traffic congestion.

One of the major resolutions that emerged from the meeting was the urgent need to clear these road encroachments. To address this, the committee proposed a week-long educational campaign to raise awareness among the public and affected vendors about the importance of keeping roads clear for safety and efficient traffic flow.

The committee emphasized that the safety of residents and road users is paramount, and that immediate action would be taken to ensure the implementation of measures that would alleviate the road safety issues in the Municipality. The education campaign is expected to provide clarity and give vendors time to adjust to the upcoming changes. After the week-long sensitization program, enforcement actions would follow to ensure compliance.

The meeting concluded with a commitment from Committee to continue collaborating with stakeholders to improve road safety in the Municipality. This initiative is part of a broader National effort to reduce road accidents and create safer, more accessible streets for all residents.
